A Lawrence man received an eight-year prison sentence on Thursday for stabbing and killing a friend during an argument.

David J. Uptain, 32, also was ordered to pay more than $1,260 to the family of the victim, Michael B. Riley.

Uptain, wearing a red jumpsuit, a bushy brown beard and a ponytail, stood as Judge Paula Martin asked him whether there was anything he wanted to say.

He said, “No.”

Riley, 49, worked as a cook at International House Of Pancakes, 3102 Iowa. In early January, he got an apartment at Hampton Court, 1704 W. 24th St., and offered to let Uptain stay there.

On Jan. 3, neighbors reported hearing shouts and thumps in the apartment. The next day, police found Riley’s body inside with multiple stab wounds.

Prosecutors initially charged Uptain with second-degree murder, but he agreed to plead no contest to one count of voluntary manslaughter as part of a plea agreement.

A police detective testified at a Jan. 31 hearing that Uptain confessed to the killing and told police Riley had threatened to kill him if he didn’t produce $50 that Riley was missing.
