In addition, Kansas’ Jesse James, a senior from Lawrence, earned honorable mention All-America honors — a first for the KU program — and teammates Ryan Ludwig and Jason Reece were named academic All-Americans, and KU coach Michael Fine was a finalist for the coach of the year award.

“It’s been a great trip so far,” Fine said. “We’re excited.”

KU’s men led qualifying with 6,191 pins. Central Florida was No. 2 with 6,161. The Jayhawks will face 16th-seeded Central Missouri State this morning in the double-elimination tournament.

The KU women will face Central Florida this morning.

“They were very challenging lane conditions,” Fine said. “Both our men and women developed the skills necessary to be successful under challenging conditions.”
