MERRIAM ? The Kansas University women’s tennis team’s season ended Thursday with a 5-2 loss to Colorado at the Big 12 Conference Championships at Kansas City Racquet Club.

The Buffaloes won two of three matches to win the doubles point, then took four of the six singles matches.

“We had talked about coming out fired up from the beginning,” KU coach Kilmeny Waterman said. “We wanted to be in a position where we had a chance to win at the end, and we did.”

Paige Brown, at No. 2, and Luiza Loureiro, at No. 6, were the singles victors for the Jayhawks, who finished 7-12 overall, 3-8 Big 12.

“Ending on this note, where we had a chance to win, will hopefully motivate us for next season,” Waterman said.

Brown beat CU’s Kate Lutgert, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, and Loureiro downed Morgan Sall, 6-4, 6-4.

Brown and Courtney Steinbock teamed for KU’s doubles victory, an 8-1 rout of Sall-Kendra Strandemo.

Kansas was seeded ninth in the tournament; Colorado (13-7) was seeded fourth.

Rain moved the tournament indoors — and in some cases, across the Kansas state line. The matches were supposed to be played at the Plaza in Kansas City, Mo.

No. 7 seed Missouri (15-6) beat 10th-seeded Nebraska (12-11), 4-0, and will play second-seeded Texas A&M today.

Sixth-seeded Kansas State advanced with a 4-1 victory over 11th-seeded Texas Tech (3-15) at the Woodside Tennis Club in Westwood.

The Wildcats (13-6) will play No. 3 seed Texas today.

Fifth-seeded Oklahoma beat 12th-seeded Iowa State, 4-2, at the Kansas City Racquet Club.

Oklahoma (19-5) will play intrastate rival and No. 4 seed Oklahoma State today.
