Shirley Rinker Ornelas Hastings

Mrs. Hastings died Monday, March 31, 2003.

She was born April 5, 1925, in WaKeeney, Kan. She moved to Lawrence, Kan., in 1958 and received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Kansas University in 1964 and a master’s degree in adult education from University of Iowa in 1970. She moved to Sun City West in 1984.

Mrs. Hastings was a U.S. cadet nurse after high school and completed her training at Kansas City General Hospital. She worked for the Health Center at Haskell Indian Nations University and eventually directed the dental-assistant program there.

She married Joe Ornelas Jr. in 1948. They divorced in 1966. She married Glen E. Hastings in 1972. He survives, now of Lawrence.

Other survivors include a daughter, Margaret “Peggy” Ornelas, Burbank, Calif.; a son, Richard Ornelas, North Hollywood, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Diana Martin, Frontenac, and Janie Hawkins, Lawrence; a sister, Helen Olander, Glendale, Ariz.; and stepgrandchildren.
