N.Y. sanctuary creates ‘barn and breakfast’

Visitors can choose to muck — or not — at a country bed-and-breakfast operated by Farm Sanctuary in New York’s Finger Lakes region.

Three B&B cabins, each of which can sleep up to four people, are at the sanctuary’s 175-acre Watkins Glen farm animal shelter, home to more than 1,000 rescued cows, pigs, turkeys and other farm animals.

Visitors can lend a hand in caring for the animals or just visit with them.

The cabins are near the People Barn, where a vegetarian breakfast is served and daily chores are handed out. The People Barn also serves as the education center for the sanctuary’s mission to prevent cruelty to farm animals.

Farm Sanctuary is open daily for tours from May through October. Information: (607) 583-2225; www.farmsanctuary.org.
