Texas sweeps Jayhawks

? Fourth-ranked Texas swept a Big 12 Conference softball doubleheader with Kansas University, 1-0 and 7-0, Saturday at McCombs Field.

KU junior Kara Pierce and senior Kirsten Milhoan combined to allow just two hits in the first game, but were hurt by a lack of offense and three errors in a 1-0 loss.

Texas (35-7, 12-2 Big 12) scored the lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Lindsay Gardner scored on an error by KU third baseman Nettie Fierros.

The Longhorns’ pitching trio of Amy Bradford, Lizi Sowers and Cat Osterman combined to limit the Jayhawks (23-18, 2-11) to one hit and two walks while striking out six.

Fierros was one of three Jayhawks to reach base in the opener with the lone hit in the fourth inning. She also reached with a walk. Freshman second baseman Jessica Moppin also walked, and junior right fielder Sylvia Pfeiffer was hit by a pitch.

Pierce (15-12) started the nightcap, but was shelled for three runs and replaced by Milhoan after getting only one out in the first inning. Milhoan pitched the final 52¼3 innings, allowing four runs.

Kansas will play host to Missouri in a border-war doubleheader Monday. First-pitch is 3 p.m. at Jayhawk Field.
