Next to last nightclub fire victim leaves hospital

? Kerrie Rock starts to laugh when she thinks about how good it will feel to wear shoes again, instead of those funny little socks with padded, no-slip bottoms.

She’s been wearing those for two months while being treated for burns she suffered in The Station nightclub fire that killed 99 people and injured nearly 200 others.

Rock, 28, was to be discharged from Rhode Island Hospital on Saturday, nearly two months after being admitted. She’s undergone two skin graft surgeries for burns she suffered on her back, hands and forearms. Thankfully, she said, her face wasn’t harmed.

Besides the burns, Rock also had to be treated for intense pain and smoke inhalation injuries that made it nearly impossible to eat. And only two weeks ago she battled a high fever.

All 43 fire victims admitted to Rhode Island Hospital on Feb. 20 survived. With Rock’s departure, only one victim from The Station fire will remain. He’s listed in serious condition. He recently started talking and hospital officials said it shouldn’t be long until he was able to go home, too.

Rock went to The Station for the Great White concert with her best friend, who spent two weeks in the hospital recovering from her injuries. When the band’s pyrotechnic display ignited foam used as soundproofing around the stage, both women fought their way to the front of the club to get out.

Rock said she didn’t want to recall the events of that night. She has enough reminders of the evening in the bandages that still grip her forearms, the wheelchair she’s confined to and the intravenous pain treatment that’s always with her.
