National League Roundup: Rusch’s bunt a game-winner

Brewers turn back Astros, 3-2, in 14 innings

? Glendon Rusch finally found a way to beat the Houston Astros — with his bat instead of his arm.

One day after losing his fifth straight decision to Houston, Rusch blooped a bunt for a game-winning pinch-hit single in the 14th inning Saturday, sending the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 victory.

“I came to the park feeling bad because of the loss,” said Rusch, a former Kansas City Royal who allowed six runs in four innings of an 11-5 loss Friday. “This is a lot better. I wasn’t trying to hit it over their heads. I was trying to get the bat on the ball and lay it down.

With the bases loaded and one out in the 14th, Rusch was called on to pinch hit for reliever John Foster. A career .138 hitter, Rusch bunted on an 0-1 pitch from Scott Linebrink (0-1).

The ball looped over the head of second baseman Jeff Kent and scored Eric Young with the winning run.

“E.Y. was coming hard. When I saw the ball go up in the air, I thought double play,” Rusch said. “Then, when I saw Kent going back I thought it might have enough legs to get over him.”

Foster (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Young started the winning rally with a single. Royce Clayton then laid down a bunt that was fielded by first baseman Jeff Bagwell, but Kent dropped the throw at first base for an error.

Both runners moved up on Brady Clark’s fly to left and Linebrink then walked Eddie Perez intentionally to load the bases. That brought up Rusch.

“I just wanted him to find a hole some place,” Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said.
