4-H and FCE News

The Vinland Valley 4-H Club met April 7 at the Vinland Elementary School. Junior officers conducted the meeting. Krystal Bateson, president, called the meeting to order. Zoey Fife read the minutes of last month’s meeting. Sandy Stone talked to members about helping at the Douglas County Free Fair concession stands and attending the Bromesick memorial. Members also were reminded that May 1 is the deadline to drop or add projects. Theresa Bateson gave record book updates. Project talks were given by members enrolled in Level 1 Foods.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 5 at the Vinland Elementary School. The Moore and Baker families will bring refreshments.

The Meadowlark 4-H Club met April 8 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Samie Milligan presided over the meeting. Members answered roll call by telling an April Fool’s joke. The club sang “Happy Birthday” to Samie Milligan and Jamie Morgison, who celebrated April birthdays. Members were reminded that the last day to drop or add projects is May 1. The club discussed the trip to Branson, Mo. Drew Fox, Samie Milligan, Margaret Pendleton and Jamie Morgison, all members enrolled in the foods project, gave the program.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 13 at the fairgrounds. Members will make tray favors before the meeting. The Parent Advisory Committee will plan a dinner honoring graduates.

The Douglas County Family and Community Education Council met April 8 at Bismarck Lake House.

It was announced that the spring achievement tea will be April 29 in Building 21 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. The program “Aprons: Icons of the American Home” will be presented by Aliene Bieber.

District Recognition Day will be May 8 at the Kansas State Historical Society in Topeka. The program “Believe in the Magic — Naturally Santa” will be presented by Ken Sutton.

FCE units will be participating in the “Character Counts Program” for fourth-grade students starting in September. This year’s character will be “Trustworthiness.”

The next Red Cross blood drive will be June 25 at First Christian Church. Kaw Valley and India FCE units each will donate six dozen cookies.

The next FCE Council meeting will be at 9 a.m. June 3 in the Deal Six Auditorium.
