Seabury soccer falls to Cair Paravel

Topeka — Seabury Academy’s young girls soccer squad continued to struggle, losing to Topeka Cair Paravel, 8-0, Thursday.

The Seahawks fell to 0-3 after the blowout loss, but Seabury coach Coy Weege said it could have been worse. He cited keeper Lindsey Ahlen for her strong play — despite allowing eight goals.

“It could have been 30-0,” Weege said. “She had tons of saves.”

The road doesn’t get easier, either. Seabury plays Monday at Leavenworth Immaculata, which Weege said has “always had an incredible program.

“I just wish we had a couple weaker schools to play,” Weege said.

Little signs with N. Iowa

Lawrence High senior swimmer Megan Little signed a letter of intent Thursday with Northern Iowa. Little, a three-time state qualifier, placed in three events at last year’s state meet, including a fifth-place finish with the 400-yard relay team. Little will probably focus on butterfly events in college, LHS coach Ryan Adams said.

Two sign with KU golf

High school seniors Jill Womble of Pleasanton, Calif., and Lauren Renz of St. Louis have signed golf letters of intent with Kansas University, coach Megan Menzel announced Thursday. Womble and Renz join Amanda Costner, Kelly Birdsell and Shelby White as KU golf signees.

LHS, FSHS boys golf competes at BVNW

Spring Hill — The Lawrence High and Free State boys golf teams competed Thursday in an altered tournament at Blue Valley Northwest. Because an abundance of golfers were at band competition in Emporia, the tournament was match-play and best-ball format.

Lawrence’s duo of Daniel Brumley and Thomas Shmalberg shot an 82 and finished second in the best-ball competition. In match play, LHS’s Nat Wells won, 2 and 1; while Free State’s Quinn Klutman tied and Nick Altieri won, 3 and 2.

The city squads travel Monday to Shawnee Country Club for a tournament sponsored by Shawnee Mission Northwest.
