Insurance

Credit scoring bill signed

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed into law Thursday a bill making it illegal for insurance companies to use a person’s credit history as the sole reason for raising premiums.

Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger, R-Lawrence, said at a Thursday news conference that the new regulation takes effect Jan. 1., but insurance companies will be required to submit information to her office much sooner.

The new law requires insurance companies to provide details on how they use credit histories in determining premiums.

Praeger said she’s not sure how large a problem the practice, called credit scoring, was in the state. But she said a majority of the 600 people who took part in an Insurance Department online survey said they had received notices from their insurance companies that their premiums were increasing because of their credit history.
