Lakers must win in Minneapolis

To capture a fourth straight NBA title, the Los Angeles Lakers must win at least one game in Minneapolis.

The Lakers beat Golden State, 117-111, Wednesday night to secure the No. 5 playoff position in the Western Conference. Los Angeles opens the best-of-seven first-round series at the Timberwolves, who will have home-court advantage for the first time in their 14-year history.

“Our goal was to get the home-court advantage all year and we accomplished that,” Minnesota’s Wally Szczerbiak said.

The Lakers started slowly this season without injured center Shaquille O’Neal, losing 18 of their first 28 games. While they climbed back up the standings, they couldn’t get the home court.

Playing an extra game at the Target Center — where Minnesota went 33-8 this season, including 23 of their last 26 — could be the edge the Timberwolves need to finally get out of the first round. They were eliminated in the five-game series each of the past six years.

The Portland Trail Blazers continued their slide with a 107-93 loss to the Clippers; Portland, which went 8-10 to finish the regular season, slipped to the No. 6 spot and will open at No. 3 Dallas.

Top-seeded San Antonio will play host to Phoenix, which lost to Seattle Wednesday night but still finished a full game ahead of Houston for the No. 8 spot.

The seventh-seeded Utah Jazz open at No. 2 Sacramento, which lost to the Lakers in a thrilling seven-game conference finals last season and is trying to break through and get to the NBA Finals.

The Detroit Pistons rested Ben Wallace for their regular-season finale, and with good reason. They’re going to need the NBA’s two-time rebounding champion healthy and rested when they begin the playoffs as the top-seeded team in the Eastern Conference.

The Pistons clinched the No. 1 spot — and home-court advantage throughout the conference playoffs — Monday night, so they were able to put Wallace and his sprained left knee on the injured list before Wednesday night’s game against Boston.

He’s expected to be ready for the opener against Orlando, which slipped to the No. 8 spot by losing at Milwaukee 93-87 Wednesday night. Game 1 is Sunday in Auburn Hills, Mich.

The Bucks rested Sam Cassell but still won for the eighth time in nine games to improve their playoff standing to seventh. They’ll open Saturday at New Jersey, the defending conference champion.

The Nets won the Atlantic Division but finished a game behind Detroit for the East’s best record.

The Indiana Pacers finished as No. 3 and will play host to the Boston Celtics, starting Saturday.

The Philadelphia 76ers beat out New Orleans for the fourth spot and home-court advantage in the series between those teams. The 76ers secured their position with a 107-87 win home win over the Washington Wizards in Michael Jordan’s final game as an NBA player. The Hornets will open Sunday at Philadelphia.
