Jayhawks snag series with Tech

KU wins baseball finale with Red Raiders, 7-6

? Kansas University won its first Big 12 Conference baseball series against a Texas school Sunday after the Jayhawks rallied in their final at-bat to clip Texas Tech, 7-6.

Kansas (28-15 overall, 4-8 Big 12) won the first game of the three-game series, 9-8, Friday night.

After blowing leads of 4-1 and 6-2 Sunday, the Jayhawks broke a 6-all tie in the top of the ninth inning when Ritchie Price scored from second base on Matt Tribble’s single up the middle.

KU starter Kevin Wheeler struggled with his control, walking three and hitting four Red Raiders in 52/3 innings, but did not factor in the decision. Free State High graduate Brandon Johnson (7-2) picked up his second win of the series after 21/3 innings of relief.

Kansas jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Ryan Baty drove a pitch into the left-field corner. Tech’s Scooter Jordan made a diving attempt, but crashed into the wall. As Jordan lay dazed on the warning track, Baty circled the bases for his eighth home run of the season.

KU’s lead was short-lived. The Red Raiders (23-15, 5-9) tied the score in the bottom half of the inning.

Kansas used consecutive singles from Tribble, Casey Spanish and Travis Metcalf and a double from Sean Flynn to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the second. Lance Hayes later drove home Metcalf for a 4-1 lead.

Flynn pushed the Jayhawk advantage to 6-2 in the fourth with a two-run single down the right-field line.

After the Red Raiders scored a single run in the sixth, Texas Tech pulled within one run on a two-run home run to left off KU reliever Josh Duran. Tech briefly tied the game on Fuller’s first career home run in the bottom of the eighth, before KU’s ninth-inning heroics.

Kansas will play host to Avila College at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Hoglund Ballpark.
