Calvary Temple Assembly of God

The Rev. Marshall Lackrone will present an illustrated sermon, “The Whip, Hammer and the Cross,” at the 10:30 a.m. Palm Sunday service at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace.

Central United Methodist Church

Special Palm Sunday service will be held at 10:45 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass.

Centropolis Baptist Church

Centropolis Baptist Church of Ottawa will be host to Singfest 2003 at 7 p.m. April 26.

The event will feature the Cooley Family, Forgiven and the Gloryland Quartet.

Haskell Cooley has appeared on Grammy-nominated albums with the Cathedrals. Forgiven has also appeared with top names in gospel music and was named Grand Champions of Branson’s gospel Showdown 2002.

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

A Bible study, “The Old Testament Made Easy,” is held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesdays with MaryLou McGonigle and the Rev. Rick Burwick at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway.

The Refuge Youth Group Rally is 7 p.m. Wednesday. Pre-Rally prayer starts at 6 p.m.

“Hunt for Peace,” four different Easter egg hunts for all ages, will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 19.

Activities include a moon walk, a 22-foot dry slide, puppet shows, a cake walk, balloon animals, face painting, cookie decorating and free hamburgers and hot dogs.

The event is free and open to the public.

Corpus Christi Catholic Church

To celebrate Palm Sunday, worship services will be held at 5:30 p.m. today and at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St. There will be evening prayer at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. Holy Thursday with adoration following until midnight.

Morning prayer will be held at 8:30 a.m. Good Friday, with Stations of the Cross at 3 p.m. and a Good Friday service at 7:30 p.m.

Morning prayer will be held at 8:30 a.m. April 19 with rights of Christian initiation for adults joining the church.

Easter Vigil will be held at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Masses will be celebrated at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Easter Sunday, April 20.

First Baptist Church

All are invited to worship at 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive.

Palm processionals will be featured, and the Rev. Marcus McFaul will preach “Into Jerusalem: Where Suffering Awaits” in both services.

During the 8:30 a.m. service, the youth choir will sing “Halle Halle Halle,” and the youth bell’s quartet will play “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.”

During the 10:45 a.m. service, the men’s choir will sing “Balm in Gilead,” and the chancel choir will sing, “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.”

First United Methodist Church

The 8:30 a.m., 9:40 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday worship services at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt., will feature the chancel choir and the children’s Singers and Ringers.

The Rev. Virgil Brady will be installed as pastor emeritus of the church at all three services.

Community-wide worship services will be held from noon to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, followed by a light lunch, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H.

The final Wednesdays in Lent program will take place with dinner at 5 p.m., study at 6 p.m. and a service of healing and reconciliation at 7:30 p.m.

There will be a 6:30 a.m. sunrise service Easter Sunday at the church’s west campus (U.S. Highway 40 and Kansas Highway 10).

At the downtown church, there will be an 8 a.m. service with the chancel choir and Celebration Ringers; a 9:30 a.m. service with the children’s choirs; and an 11 a.m. service with the chancel choir, Celebration Ringers and children’s choirs.

April is the church’s month to collect food for the Trinity Interfaith Food Pantry. Supplies are low, and the pantry is in need of rice, sugar and flour.

Grocery carts are available at both entrances of the sanctuary for food drop offs. Donations from the community are welcomed.

Heartland Community Church

Heartland Medical Clinic, a ministry of Heartland Community Church, 619 Vt., is now open additional hours each week.

The clinic, which provides free family-practice care to those without health insurance, is open during the following hours: 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays; 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesdays; 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesdays; and 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays.

Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center

Easter at Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center, 2104 W. 15th St., will be celebrated this year with a special theme, “Watchers on the Hill.”

A Maundy Thursday service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A worship service will be held at noon Good Friday. A second service, held at 7:30 p.m., will feature a special musical presentation, “Savior of the World,” with an original Passion Cantata by Immanuel’s music director, Geoff Wilcken.

The cantata tells the story of Jesus’ last days in Jerusalem before his death. Written by Wilcken in 2002 for the Good Friday service at Immanuel, the cantata includes choruses and congregational hymns interspersed with narration from the Gospel of Matthew.

The church’s chancel choir and worship and praise choir perform the cantata with accompaniment by a chamber orchestra.

A traditional worship service will be held at 8:30 a.m. Easter Sunday, with a contemporary service at 11 a.m.

The services and the cantata performance are open to the public.

Kansas Zen Center

A “Foundations of Zen” Class is offered at 7 p.m. Mondays April 14-28 at the Kansas Zen Center, 1423 N.Y.

The introductory class is open to anyone who has an interest in Zen Buddhism or Zen Buddhist practice.

Dharma master Judy Roitman, the center’s guiding teacher, will lead the class.

Cost to attend the class is $30, including class sessions and printed study materials.

Lawrence Wesleyan Church

The community is invited to join the congregation of Lawrence Wesleyan Church as it comes together to celebrate Friend Day in Building 21 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Participants will meet at 9 a.m. Sunday for doughnuts, coffee and juice, followed by worship at 10 a.m., which will feature a drama performed by the church’s youth and a message by the Rev. Nate Rovenstine on the Prodigal Son.

The service will conclude as the children lead worshippers in a Palm Sunday celebration.

The congregation will gather at 7 p.m. Friday at Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway, to share Communion and commemorate Good Friday.

Child care will be provided for all services.

An old-fashioned Easter egg hunt will start at 11 a.m. April 19, including a petting zoo, games and refreshments.

Living Water Church

A new church fellowship called Living Water Church has begun meeting at the Lawrence Visitor Information Center, 402 N. Second St.

The Rev. Hugh and Mary Ellen Wentz are co-founders of the fellowship.

The fellowship’s first outreach project will be to plant, harvest and distribute fresh vegetables grown in north Lawrence.

The community is welcome to worship with the fellowship at 9:45 a.m. Sundays at the center.

Morning Star Christian Church

The grand opening dedication of Morning Star Christian Church, 998 N. 1771 Road, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday.

The dedication will be followed by an open house at 4:30 p.m., featuring tours of the church and highlighting Morning Star’s ministries and Bible college.

The events are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served at the open house.

The 200-member congregation, established 11 years ago, completed work on the new facility in early March.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

The parish of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1229 Ky., will be host to a social at 10 a.m. Passion Sunday for members of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Participants will gather at 10:30 a.m. in South Park and share a blessing of palms before returning to their respective churches for 11 a.m. worship.

The schedule for Triduum services is as follows:

Holy Thursday: 7 p.m., Mass of the Lord’s Supper, with washing of feet.

Good Friday: 8 a.m. morning prayer, 3 p.m. The Lord’s Passion and 7 p.m. Tenebrae.

Holy Saturday: 8 a.m. morning prayer, 8 p.m. The Great Vigil with the blessing of fire and the Paschal candle, liturgy of the Word, initiation rites and liturgy of the Eucharist. There is no Sunday anticipated liturgy at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Easter Sunday: 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. worship services.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

Palm Sunday celebration will begin outside at the 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. services at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

The procession will lead into the church with uplifting music, and the children will receive special palms. The Passion Gospel will be illustrated by the Readers Team, and PowerPoint production of Stations of the Cross will be included.

The theme of the worship services is “Turning Failure into Victory.”

Trinity Episcopal Church

Palm Sunday will be celebrated with services at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

The 10:30 a.m. service will begin outside on the lawn with the distribution of palms and the liturgy of the palms. The congregation will then process into the church for the rest of the service.

Trinity’s Loving Communities Group will meet at 9 a.m. Sunday in the upper room.

Trinity’s youth group meets for dinner at 5 p.m. Sunday in the parish hall. All youth are invited to come and take part in the planning of the youth party scheduled for April 27.

Trinity Lutheran Church

Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H., will be host to a series of Community Holy Week services and lunches in the coming week.

The services begin at noon, followed by lunch every day except Friday. Friday’s noon service will be Tenebrae.

The services will feature liturgists and preachers from a variety of Lawrence churches, and members of various churches will also provide the food for the lunches, which will be served in Trinity’s fellowship hall.

Trinity’s Holy Week services begin Palm Sunday with a joint fellowship at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1229 Ky. From there, members of both churches will join in South Park for a blessing of the palms before processing to their own church services. The children of Trinity will sing at the church’s 11 a.m. service.

Holy week observance at Trinity continues with Holy Eucharist at 7:30 p.m. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday liturgy at 7:30 p.m. and an Easter Vigil starting at 8 p.m. April 19.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A spiritual celebration, “Simple Pleasures,” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

John Head, professor in Kansas University’s School of Law, will present a program, “Legal and Other Views on Economic Globalization,” from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by coffee and fellowship from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Washington Creek Church of the Brethren

A Last Supper portrayal with Holy Communion, candlelight service and scenes from the Bible of the Upper Room and Garden of Gesthemane will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Washington Creek Church of the Brethren, 609 E. 550 Road.

The event is sponsored by a group of southwest Douglas County churches, including Clinton Presbyterian, Country Community Church, Lone Star Church of the Brethren, St. John’s United Church of Christ, Washington Creek Church of the Brethren and Worden United Methodist Church.

West Side Presbyterian Church

The triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday will be explored through the eyes of the donkey in a grown-up children’s story, based on Mark 11:1-11 at the 11 a.m. worship hour at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

The choir will present “Hosanna to the King” by Eugene Butler, and the children will recapture the moment with waving palm branches.

The offering for the One Great Hour of Sharing will be received this week and next Sunday.

The final session of the lenten study at 5:30 p.m. Sunday will incorporate all three of the remaining chapters in order to complete the study book. The regular session meeting will follow at 7 p.m.

Lydia Circle will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, and Martha Circle will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the church.

A Seder dinner will be held Maundy Thursday in the fellowship hall, followed by a brief Holy Communion service in the sanctuary. Cost for the meal is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children ages 6-12, children under 5 free.

The bell choir will present “When Jesus Wept” by Douglas E. Wagner during the service. This will not be an imitation of the traditional, Jewish celebration of Seder, but will demonstrate the link between Passover and the Lord’s Supper.

Wheatland Church of Christ

Wheatland Church of Christ, 1449 Kasold Drive, will commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus at 7 p.m. Friday with a dramatic, multi-media presentation — “The Scandal of the Cross” — that takes worshippers back to Golgotha, where Jesus was killed as a common criminal.

The presentation will offer historical details of crucifixion to help people gain a deeper understanding of the central tenet of Christianity: the death, burial and Resurrection of Jesus.

Admission is free.
