Sierra Club to discuss Kansas’ wildlife refuges

The Wakarusa Group of the Sierra Club will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt. The topic will be “Discovering State Treasures: Kansas’ Five National Wildlife Refuges.”

Alice Hanley, assistant manager of the Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge in Hartford, will discuss her refuge and the four others in Kansas: Marais des Cygne, Cimarron National Grasslands, Quivira and Kirwin refuges. She will share the history of the wildlife refuge system, which is 100 years old this year, show slides and discuss the environmental and economic well-being of Kansas refuges. The club will have social hour before the meeting at 6 p.m. at Rudy’s Pizzeria, 704 Mass.

The group will have an informational table from noon to 4 p.m. April 19 at Earth Day festivities in South Park. April 19 also is the deadline to sign up for an overnight canoe trip May 16-17 on the Kansas River with Riverkeeper Dave Murphy.
