Woodling: Why didn’t Roy go yet? 10 reasons

Will he or won’t he? Nobody knows for sure except Roy Williams, and now that we have been placed on hold through the weekend, we can only speculate about how the wheels will be turning and in which direction.

Anyway, while we wait, here are 10 reasons — some tongue-in-cheek — why Williams and North Carolina officials failed to reach an accord Thursday as we expected:

10. With Al Bohl and Baghdad falling on the same day, Williams was too overcome with emotion to make a decision.

9. Williams didn’t want to wear Carolina blue knickers while playing golf this weekend at Riviera and Bel-Air country clubs in the Los Angeles area with KU benefactor Dana Anderson.

8. Dean Smith will be attending an anti-death penalty seminar over the weekend and will not be available for mentoring duties.

7. North Carolina AD Dick Baddour declined to offer Williams the job until Williams would tell him he would take the job if it were offered, but Williams wouldn’t say he would take the job if it was offered because he didn’t want to be offered the job unless it wasn’t offered. So they checked with their lawyers, and the mouthpieces said they would need all weekend to go over the fine print.

6. Williams’ wife, Wanda, requested extra time to investigate the report by ESPN.com’s Andy Katz that one of their daughters lives in North Carolina. Roy and Wanda both believe they have only one daughter and that Kimberly Williams lives in Lawrence.

5. Son Scott Williams, who lives in Charlotte, N.C., told his folks he would need a couple of days to convince his friends he hadn’t undergone a sex-change operation.

4. Carolina officials didn’t want any distractions around Saturday’s eagerly anticipated spring football game.

3. Williams turned Carolina down, but school officials, hoping to avoid egg on their faces, asked him to stay mum until they found someone else to take the job — Larry Brown? — over the weekend.

2. Carolina officials want to talk to Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, figuring he might be interested if all of his super freshmen opt for the NBA Draft.

1. Williams suffered damage to his fingers when he tried to crush a bar of Dove soap while taking a shower.
