Raintree road event upcoming

Registration will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday for Sunday’s Raintree Run, a half-marathon and 5K that benefits Raintree Montessori School.

The races will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday at the school on Clinton Parkway. Pre-race registration will begin at 6:45 a.m.

“Last year we were one of the largest road races in Kansas,” meet director Steve Riley said, “and our numbers are up again this year.”

Pre-race favorites in the half marathon are Shadrack Kimeli, a former Kansas State runner who won the 2001 NCAA Midwest cross country regional, and Phil Hudnall of Kansas City, Mo., who has qualified for the Olympic Trials marathon.

Several top female runners from the region have entered, including Cindy Cameron of Kansas City, and Nicole Latimer of Lawrence, who was runner-up last year.

Chris Ronan, last year’s 5k winner, will return.

A number of top masters runners, including Lawrence’s Dick Wilson and Eudora’s Paul Heitzman are entered. For information, call Riley at 842-4351.

The run is the opening event for the Kansas Relays.
