Athletes of the week

Sarah Marlow

Lawrence High

Class: Senior

Sport: Girls Swimming

The week: On a squad of 49 swimmers, Marlow stands out. She usually wins the longer freestyle events, but was just as good in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke at Tuesday’s home dual against Shawnee Mission South. Marlow won the IM in a time of 2:15.92 and took second in the breaststroke, swimming 1:12.26. And, as usual, she anchored the LHS 400 free relay, which took first, and 200 free relay, which took second.

Comment: “She was a little worried how well she would place. I think she was real pleased with the way she did,” LHS coach Ryan Adams said. “She’s real driven, she works hard, and she inspires the other girls to work hard.”

Rachel Miles

Baldwin

Class: Junior

Sport: Girls Track

The week: Miles, a two-time placer last year at the Class 4A state meet, got off to a blazing start this season by winning the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes at the Baldwin Invitational Friday. She also anchored the Bulldogs’ 4×100 relay team, which took second. Miles, also a standout volleyball player, ran the 200 in 28.78 seconds and covered the 400 in 1:03.78. For a girl who ran the 400 in 59.2 as a freshman, watch out when Miles hits her stride.

Comment: “She’s a blue-chipper. Just a real quality athlete,” Baldwin coach Ted Zuzzio said. “She’s just an all-around good athlete on top of being a good kid and good student. One of those kids that makes your job easier, you know?”
