Janzen holds BellSouth top spot

Leader fires third-round 67; Tway two back

? Lee Janzen surged into the lead in the third round of the BellSouth Classic, shooting a 5-under 31 on the final nine holes Saturday for a two-stroke advantage over Bob Tway.

Janzen, who hasn’t won in five years, finished with a 5-under 67 on the rain-softened TPC at Sugarloaf, which had played hard and fast in the opening two rounds. He had a 13-under 203 total.

Heavy rain caused a delay of about an hour in the morning before the leaders teed off, and the weather left the course vulnerable.

Tway, mired in an eight-year losing streak, held the lead most of the day before a bogey on No. 17. He rallied with a birdie on the last hole, shooting a 69 to stay within two shots of the lead.

The two leaders will be joined in the final group today by Tom Pernice Jr., who had 66 for a 206 total. Hank Kuehne, who got into the tournament earlier in the week on a sponsor’s exemption, was four strokes back after a 67.

With the greens more receptive to approach shots, several players made charges up the leaderboard.

The first was Ben Crane, who was 1 over after two rounds and made the cut by one shot. He birdied the last three holes Saturday for a 64, the lowest round of the tournament, and was tied for seventh with five other players.

Next came Kuehne, the 1998 U.S. Amateur champ. He doesn’t have playing status on the PGA Tour, and his exemption on the minor-league Nationwide Tour is conditional. But just as he was leaving his hotel Monday before open qualifying for the tournament, he got a call with an offer of a sponsor’s exception.
