American League Roundup: Sox keep Tigers winless

Detroit has scored just four runs in five games

? Mark Buehrle works quickly on warm days. When it’s freezing, his rapid-fire pace makes teammates even happier.

“Everybody just wanted to get out of here. We tried to minimize the time on the field and get back to the dugout,” catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. said Saturday after Buehrle led the Chicago White Sox past the Detroit Tigers, 7-0.

Buehrle allowed just three hits in eight innings, and Alomar, Frank Thomas and Jose Valentin homered in a game that took 2 hours, 16 minutes.

The game-time temperature was 32 degrees, the coldest home game for the White Sox since they started recording temperatures in 1990.

“Usually when it’s cold, you try to keep it inside a little more because they don’t want to swing and jam themselves,” Buehrle said. “But my sinker was working so well today, I was able to keep it on the outside.”

Right now, any pitching philosophy is working against the Tigers.

Detroit, 0-5 for the second straight season, has scored just four runs this year, a franchise record-low, and has just 16 hits. Last year, the Tigers lost their first 11 games.

Detroit is first team to start 0-5 in consecutive seasons since Kansas City in 1992 and 1993, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, baseball’s statistician.

“When you’re losing and you’re not producing, it stinks,” rookie manager Alan Trammell said. “It hurts and it should hurt. … I hope it’s drawing them to a point where they want to get better, not give in and say, ‘It’s the way it’s going to be the rest of the year.'”

Rangers 8, Mariners 4

Arlington, Texas — Juan Gonzalez homered twice and Alex Rodriguez and Hank Blalock also connected, leading Texas past Seattle. Gonzalez has 408 career home runs, and he moved past Duke Snider for 33rd on the all-time list. Gonzalez and Rodriguez each have three home runs this season.

Gonzalez’s three-run homer capped a four-run first for the Rangers, who broke a three-game losing streak. His solo homer in the fifth, an out after Rodriguez homered, made it 6-2. It was the 44th multihomer game for Gonzalez. He fell short in his bid for a three-homer game with a deep flyout to center in the seventh.

Blue Jays 4, Twins 3 (11)

Minneapolis — Josh Phelps homered off Eddie Guardado with one out in the top of the 11th inning to give Toronto a victory against Minnesota. Phelps, who also homered in the Blue Jays’ 7-2 win Friday, sent an 0-1 pitch from Guardado (0-1) — the Twins’ All-Star closer — into the seats in left-center field. Kelvim Escobar pitched the bottom of the 11th for his first save, and Pete Walker (1-0) picked up the victory.

The two teams combined to leave 26 runners on base.

Carlos Delgado went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Shannon Stewart was 2-for-3 with three walks and two runs for the Blue Jays.

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1

Baltimore — Chad Fox walked Tony Batista with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning, giving Baltimore a victory against Boston. After the Red Sox rallied to tie it in the top of the ninth on a bases-loaded walk, Baltimore took advantage of another poor showing by the Boston bullpen to win it. The defeat snapped a four-game winning streak for the Red Sox, who scored 42 runs in their first five games.

Athletics 4, Angels 2

Oakland, Calif. — Adam Piatt homered and doubled in a rare start and John Halama did not allow an earned run in 52¼3 innings as Oakland defeated Anaheim. Piatt hit a solo home run in the first off Jarrod Washburn (0-1) and also made an athletic, running catch in left on a line drive by David Eckstein in the second. Piatt doubled in the third on a day manager Ken Macha started only one regular in the outfield, right fielder Jermaine Dye.

Devil Rays 6, Yankees 5

St. Petersburg, Fla. — Al Martin singled over a drawn-in outfield with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and Tampa Bay handed New York its first loss of the season.

The Devil Rays scored twice in the eighth to tie it, then loaded the bases in the ninth when Carl Crawford singled, Rocco Baldelli doubled and Aubrey Huff drew an intentional walk from Antonio Osuna (0-1). Martin lined Osuna’s first pitch over the head of right fielder Raul Mondesi.
