Kansas University saw mixed results in rankings released Friday by U.S. News and World Report.

Twenty-two KU graduate programs now are ranked in the top 25 among public universities, up from 19 last year.

But several programs, including the School of Law, slipped in their national rankings. The law school was ranked 55th among all universities, and now it’s 64th.

U.S. News and World Report, often used as a barometer toward Chancellor Robert Hemenway’s goal of becoming a top-25 university, ranks graduate programs in business, education, engineering, law and medicine annually. It ranks programs in other fields less frequently.

Two programs retained their top-ranking status this year among public universities. The special education program in the School of Education is top in public schools, but Vanderbilt University topped KU this year in the overall rankings for the first time in several years.

The city management and urban policy program is first among all universities.

The graduate program at the School of Nursing went down from 29th to 36th this year, and the overall program at the School of Education went up from 36th to 35th.

Other KU graduate-school rankings released Friday included primary care medicine (51st) and fine arts (54th). Graduate schools not ranked in the top 100 included engineering, research medicine and business.

Other top-10 programs for KU include community health, paleontology, public management administration, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, audiology, sedimentology/stratigraphy, public affairs and public finance and budgeting.

KU’s undergraduate program in business ranked 47th and undergraduate engineering program ranked 61st. KU itself is ranked as a Tier 2 school, meaning it’s ranked between 52nd and 129th.
