Calvary Temple Assembly of God

The women of Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace, have sent a CARE package to U.S. troops overseas, as many members of the church family have relatives serving in Kuwait or Iraq.

Other CARE packages will follow.

Women’s ministries will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

The Rev. Marshall Lackrone will present an illustrated sermon, “The Whip, Hammer and the Cross,” at the 10:30 a.m. Palm Sunday service, April 13.

The men of the church will help with the illustration.

Central United Methodist Church

Loving Arms, a cancer support group, will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass.

Healing Hearts, grief support group, will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Gen X is a young adult group that meets at 9 p.m. Wednesdays.

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

Kent Linneweh, missionary to the Netherlands, will be the guest speaker at the 8 a.m. Sunday worship service at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway. He will briefly share his ministry during the 10:30 a.m. service.

A Bible study, “The Old Testament Made Easy,” led by MaryLou McGonigle and the Rev. Rick Burwick, pastor, is held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesdays.

The Refuge Youth Group Rally is Wednesday. Pre-Rally prayer begins at 6 p.m. The rally begins at 7 p.m.

Corpus Christi Catholic Church

A Knights of Columbus breakfast will be held after Masses Sunday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St. Evening prayer will be at 4:30 p.m.

Adoration will be observed from 7:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday, and the rosary group will meet at 7 p.m.

Communal penance services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Stations of the Cross will be observed at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The last scheduled opportunity for confessions during Lent will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 12.

First Presbyterian Church

The youth of the Northern Kansas Presbytery will be celebrated at the 8:30 a.m. Sunday simple worship service at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway.

At the 11 a.m. worship service, the church will be host to Professor Amy-Jill Levine of Vanderbilt University, a scholar of the Old and New testaments.

Levine, this year’s Theologian in Residence, is a Jewish scholar of Christian origins and brings a unique perspective to biblical texts. Her reflections will focus on women in the Bible and in the early Christian movement.

Levine will present a workshop, “The Bible and Sexuality,” from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

At 6:30 p.m., she will reconvene and share some of her own faith journey, as well as her academic journey. The session will be followed by a time of questions and answers.

There is no charge for any of the Sunday events.

First United Methodist Church

An all-church birthday party will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

The event will feature refreshments, games, face painting, mini basketball and the moonwalk.

April is the church’s month to collect food for the Trinity Interfaith Food Pantry. The pantry especially needs canned fruit, canned meat, macaroni and cheese and peanut butter.

Grocery carts are placed at both entrances of the sanctuary for food drop offs.

Donations from the community are welcomed.

Interfaith Caring Neighbors

Interfaith Caring Neighbors (ICAN) welcomes Sherry Warren as its new director.

ICAN offers informal support services to elder citizens in the Lawrence and Eudora areas through a volunteer network of concerned citizens.

Warren recently attended the statewide meeting for organizations affiliated with Faith in Action, a nationwide effort to encourage community volunteerism, that is based at Wake Forest University.

Warren is working toward a master’s in social welfare and acts as the director of religious education at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence.

Martha and Mary’s Way

The public is invited to participate in three events this week sponsored by Martha and Mary’s Way, a Lawrence-based ministry to women.

The last in a series of lenten worship services will be held at noon Wednesday in the chapel of Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt. The Rev. Judy Long O’Neal, pastor of Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth St., will lead the service.

Martha and Mary’s Way presents the second speaker in the series “Religions of the World: Women’s Perspectives from Within,” at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt. The speaker is Mahnaz Shabbir, who will speak of her experience as an American Muslim woman.

Martha and Mary’s Way is sponsoring an interactive, experiential workshop, “Spirituality Through Art,” April 12. Deb Erickson, an artist and writer from Fairland, Okla., will lead the workshop.

The event includes a silent auction featuring art by women in the Lawrence area.

Registration is $10 per person, which may be paid in advance or at the door.

Plymouth Congregational Church

A forum on the war in Iraq will be held at 10:45 a.m. Sunday in the Mayflower Room of Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

Jean Grant, David Ambler and Frank Smysor will each speak briefly. An open forum will follow.

Regular coffee hour will be in the Heritage Room.

Amy-Jill Levine, a professor at Vanderbilt University, a theologian and scholar of the Old and New testaments, will speak on “Women’s Roles in the Bible” during Sunday morning focus class, which meets at 9:45 a.m. in Room 202N.

Redeemer Lutheran Church

The Redeemer Lutheran Women’s Missionary League will have its annual spring bake sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 12 at the church, 2700 Lawrence Ave.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The children of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St., will continue with their Easter preparation at the 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday services.

Bishop William Smalley will meet with the confirmation group at 4 p.m. and preach in the 5:30 p.m. service.

The final session in the lenten series will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the church and will include food, fellowship, prayer, reflection and worship.

Society of Open-Minded Atheists

The Society of Open-Minded Atheists (SOMA) and Ecumenical Christian Ministries will co-sponsor “Religiously Incorrect,” a talk show akin to television’s “Politically Incorrect,” only addressing religious issues, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the ECM building, 1204 Oread.

The show will feature representatives of Christianity, humanism, Judaism and Islam. Participants will discuss, in an open and entertaining forum, issues pertaining to religion, morality and the separation of church and state.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

The Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road, will be host to a spiritual celebration — “What Does Dreamwork Off UU’s?” — from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

The spiritual celebration will be followed by a program, “Families of Origin,” from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

There will be a time for coffee and fellowship from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Unity Church of Lawrence

Worship services at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday at Unity Church of Lawrence, 900 Madeline Lane, will focus on “Secrets of Prayer and Healing.”

There will be a time for meditation at 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by worship at 7:45 p.m.

The church will be host to a family pot luck at 6:15 p.m. Friday.

Effective April 13, the Unity’s first Sunday worship service will be held at 8:30 a.m.

West Side Presbyterian Church

The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be observed Sunday at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

The lenten study will continue with Chapter Five of “Dying to Live” at 5:30 p.m., followed by a light snack. The series will end on Palm Sunday.

West Side’s day to assist with the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen program is Thursday.
