National asset

The work being done by the Midwest Research Institute of Kansas City provides benefits around the world.

Midwest Research Institute of Kansas City is one of the most underappreciated assets in this part of the country. It is unfortunate more people don’t know more about this internationally recognized research center.

The list of scientific, engineering, energy-related and national defense projects tackled by MRI scientists and researchers is impressive. Since it was founded in 1944, MRI has excelled in addressing real world problems.

A timely and perfect example of this excellence is the institute’s work for the United States government in devising reliable tests to detect biological and chemical agents that could be used against our armed forces abroad as well as against the general citizenry here at home.

With Uncle Sam’s current war against Saddam Hussein and the threat he might resort to chemical and biological weapons, the research and engineering of MRI scientists may prove to be invaluable. MRI researchers also are working on a number of top-level programs such as a means of detecting airborne bacteria such as anthrax, the development of a “skin” that detoxifies nerve agents, the development of vaccines to protect both civilians and military personnel against bioterrorist attacks and other vital projects for the government.

The range of activity at MRI is impressive. Its work for the government and private industry on projects related to the environment, national defense, health care and many other spheres has resulted in the institute gaining increased recognition and respect.

MRI is a unique and valuable asset not only to this part of the country but to the entire United States.
