Committed to schools

Before, during and after the school bond debate, Supt. Randy Weseman is dedicated to educating the children of Lawrence.

The community and the Lawrence school board now must regroup after Tuesday’s defeat of the district’s proposed bond issue.

The financial problems faced by the district have not eased and the needs of Lawrence children have not decreased. As the board and district patrons work to address these issues, they are fortunate to have the assistance and leadership of Supt. Randy Weseman.

Weseman said many times that his role was not to “sell” the bond issue but to provide information to voters. To accomplish that goal, he spoke at many meetings and participated in many public forums. He also was the target of considerable criticism.

Even those who leveled that criticism, however, probably wouldn’t question Weseman’s dedication to the Lawrence school district and its students. Weseman has spent his career in the Lawrence district as a teacher, principal and top administrator. He knows this district and he knows Lawrence.

Voters have decided that the proposed bond issue wasn’t the answer. Although there is little doubt Weseman is disappointed by that decision, there is no question he will continue to work hard to find new ways to address the district’s needs. His commitment to his important job is something the community and the children of Lawrence should recognize and appreciate.
