Jennifer and Daniel Coates, Ottawa, announce the birth of a daughter, Riley Rae Coates, born Feb. 25, 2003, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She has a brother, Britten, 2.

Grandparents are Jerry and Paula Moore and Charlene Coates, all of Baldwin. Great-grandparents are Myra and Bob Howell, Ottawa, and Nadine Moore, Tonganoxie.

Marianne Schroer, a student at Baldwin Junior High School, won first place and a $1,000 bond in the Bright Spot for Health’s statewide contest “Health Is … .” Hallie Rombach and Ashleigh Allam, both Perry Middle School students, received honorable mention in the contest.

Ruth Herpich, Lawrence, was inducted Feb. 22 into the Alpha Iota Gamma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society at Johnson County Community College.

Wichita State University has announced that Caitlin Rose, a Bishop Seabury Academy student, has been invited to participate in the 2003 Regents Honors Academy. She will join more than 120 other Kansas students for a monthlong program in June at WSU.

Lawrence native Lindsay Shields was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2002 semester at Brevard College in Brevard, N.C., by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

David Grote, Eudora, earned a dean’s scholarship for the 2003 spring semester at Pittsburg State University. He is the son of Terry and Janet Grote.

Christopher Williams made the dean’s list for the fall 2002 semester at Duke University, Durham, N.C. He is the son of Frederick and Linda Williams, Lawrence.

Geoffrey Washburn, Lawrence, received the American Legion William P. Tolley Scholarship Award during Syracuse University’s Army and Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps Chancellor’s Review and Awards ceremony. The award is presented annually to cadets in the top 10 percent of an academic class.
