Jayhawks hit road to cheer for team

? Sam Agnew saw all this coming — so clearly, in fact, that last year he quit school at Arizona State and enrolled at Kansas University.

All for today’s 16-hour road trip from Lawrence here to the Final Four.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance,” said Agnew, a fourth-year student. “It’s great to be a part of something like this. I was in Lawrence last year when they went to the Final Four in St. Louis, and it was so cool I transferred. I want to graduate from KU.

“It’s awesome. It’s one of the best decisions I ever made.”

Agnew and three classmates — Shoreview, Minn., senior Josh Coppersmith and Lawrence sophomore Brett Buxton and senior John Waller — will be piling into Agnew’s white Toyota 4Runner at 9 this morning to make the 950-mile highway trek to New Orleans.

The Jayhawks play Marquette at 5:07 p.m. Saturday at the Louisiana Superdome. The winner will play either Texas or Syracuse at 8:22 p.m. Monday for the national championship.

KU received 4,500 tickets for the game, all of which were distributed to the school’s team and official delegation, along with staff, students and donors who registered before the tournament.

And that doesn’t count the fans who’ll be in town on spec — to take a shot at scoring tickets, or more likely just to soak up the New Orleans atmosphere.
