Recruits scoff at rumors of Williams leaving KU

Incoming Kansas University freshman basketball player Omar Wilkes chuckled when asked about rumors of Roy Williams possibly heading to North Carolina.

“I can’t really comment. I’ll just say I’m not worried. I’m not nervous, and I’m still going to KU — if that helps you any,” Wilkes, a 6-4 guard from Los Angeles, said Wednesday.

“I kind of laughed when I saw that on TV,” Wilkes said of rumors Williams would take the North Carolina job. “I’m not laughing at North Carolina, the program, but I just figure any coaching job, coach Williams’ name will come up. I’ll just say I am coming to KU.”

Also, nobody is sweating bullets in the J.R. Giddens household over published reports North Carolina again will come after Williams, who declined a job offer from his alma mater in the summer of 2000.

Giddens, a 6-foot-5 McDonald’s All American from Oklahoma City, also is headed to KU.

“Coach Williams told us when J.R. signed, he wasn’t going anywhere, that he was content where he was,” a member of the Giddens family said, speaking for the entire family.

“He said he was content where he was. We asked coach Williams, ‘If J.R. signs, will you be there?’ He told us he wasn’t going anywhere. Coach Williams is a man of his word. He is an outstanding man. We will not believe any rumors. When you have his word, he gives you his word. His word is his signature.”
