Bregman State Champ: Scott Bregman of Lawrence Gymnastics Academy won the Class 2 all-around competition at the Kansas Gymnastics Championships with a score of 42.50 and qualified for the regional in Austin, Texas. Bregman won the floor exercise, pommel horse and vault. Also, LGA’s Bryant Humphrey won the vault and finished third in the Class 6 all-around, and Nick Lutz was 11th in Class 7 all-around.
- Wrestling Golds: Brandon Goodwin and Jesse Hardy of Jayhawk Kids Wrestling Club won gold medals at the USA State Championships last weekend in Topeka. Brett Shoffner earned a third place and Scott Deo a fifth. Meanwhile, Emma Mercer earned a third place in the girls division.
- Heitzman Sets Records: Paul Heitzman of Eudora won the ages 70-74 division of the Osteopathic 8K last Saturday in Tulsa, Okla., in time of 34.56 which set a state age-group record. The record came just a week after Heitzman had set a 5K Oklahoma age-group record by winning the Wish Lemons 5K in 20:27.

Weightlifting Titleist: Brady Tanner of Lawrence won the 242-pound weight class at a World Assn. of Bench Press and Dead Lift regional last weekend in McAlester, Okla. Tanner bench-pressed a personal-best 275 pounds and dead-lifted 400 pounds. He qualified for the world championships in December in Las Vegas.

Rhodes Ranks High: Fort Hays State senior Jim Rhodes, a senior from Lawrence, ranked third in NCAA Div. II in three-point shooting percentage. Rhodes made 78 of 160 three-point attempts (48.8 percent) for the Tigers, who finished with a 23-8 record.

McGarity Earns Bronze: Brendan McGarity of Kansas School of Gymnastics placed third in the Class 5 all-around with a score of 51.1 at the state meet last weekend and qualified for the regional in Austin, Texas. Other KSG state competitors were Landon Noll, Akram Laytimi, Dakota Zinn, Noel Fisher, Worth Singles-Smith and Morgan Rego.
- Orchards Leagues: Two golf leagues will begin this month at Orchards Golf Course — a duffers league Wednesdays and a USD 497 staff-spouses league Friday evenings. For information, call Chuck Mead at 842-1560 or 865-9896.
