Free State soccer trips Shawnee Heights

? Meredith Mayo scored two goals Tuesday, and Free State High’s soccer team defeated Shawnee Heights, 3-1.

Mayo’s unassisted goal gave the Firebirds a 1-0 lead, which it carried into halftime. Shawnee Heights tied the score on a penalty kick midway through the second half, but Mayo scored again two minutes later with an assist from Rebekah Berkley.

Celese Siebert later made it 3-1 with assist from Emily Erb.

Free State goalkeeper Alicia Sellon had seven saves in the shutout.

“We played very well,” Free State coach Jason Pendleton said.

“It was a great team effort, and we showed improvement from our first game.”

Free State improved to 2-0. Shawnee Heights, the fourth-ranked team in Class 5A, fell to 1-1.

Free State will play host to Shawnee Mission Northwest Thursday.
