KU softball splits twinbill

Kansas University’s softball team will journey Wednesday to Wichita State to tune up for this weekend’s home series against Texas Tech.

The Jayhawks and Shockers will play a twinbill at 4 p.m. It will be the second doubleheader in four days for KU, which split a pair of games Sunday at Iowa State.

Jessica Moppin and Sylvia Pfeiffer homered as KU won the opener in Ames, 7-0. However, the Cyclones rebounded to take the second game, 3-1. KU is 1-5 in the Big 12 Conference; 21-9 in all games. ISU is 1-3 in the league and 13-18 overall.

In Sunday’s opener, the Jayhawks scored three runs in the first inning, highlighted by Melaney Torres’ RBI double and Moppin’s two-run home run. In the fifth inning, Nettie Fierros scored on a single by Destiny Frankenstein, giving Kansas a 4-0 lead. KU tacked on three more runs in the sixth, including a solo homer by Pfeiffer.

Junior Kara Pierce (13-7) held the Cyclones to two hits while fanning six in her fifth shutout of the season.

In the second game, ISU scored two runs in the first inning off Kirsten Milhoan. KU plated its only run in the top of the second when Moppin singled, went to third on Ashley Frazer’s double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Fierros.

Kansas will play host to Texas Tech at 2 p.m. Saturday and at 1 p.m. Sunday at Jayhawk Field.
