City commissioners said they were “leaning toward” acceptance of a plan for a $2,500 “action program” to study how to produce development at the north end of the downtown area. There had been complaints about the rundown appearance of the area where a new city hall was to be built. An old grain mill was the major eyesore, officials said.

IN 1962

Emil Heck, longtime local leader in flood control activities, was encouraged by the fact the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee approved $750,000 for the Perry Reservoir 14 miles northwest of Lawrence.

The city recreation program had involved more than 40,000 persons the past summer, according to superintendent Wayne Bly.
