Old home town – 100 years ago today

On Sept. 29, 1902, the Lawrence World noted that while Kansas was a dry state, frequently Lawrence residents indulged themselves.

The World commented, “In some towns drunken men are not arrested unless they make some disturbance. They are promptly arrested in Lawrence and it is right that they should be.

“There is no reason why the town should be disgraced by maudlin citizens staggering along the street. Every drunken man disturbs the peace of the people and the only way to reach such cases is to fine the offenders.

“It is argued that the men who sell the liquor ought to be punished. True enough, but no man is ever compelled to buy. We want to keep it in mind that the man who drinks liquor is the one to arrest.”
