She was born Sept. 27, 1940, in St. Joseph, Mo. She moved to Lawrence in 1963 from Topeka.

Ms. Dalton worked at Gibson’s Discount Center during the 1970s and 80s. She was co-owner of Simple Good for the past seven years. She was also a representative for toy manufacturers. She was a member of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church and active in Earth Day activities.

Survivors include her life partner, Kathy Roberts, of the home; five daughters, Judy Lockley, Renton, Wash., Jane Kessinger, Baldwin, Jeannie Santschi, Carrollton, Tex., Janet Murphy, Lawrence, and Jennifer Ferguson, Paola; a son, James E. Dalton II, Austin, Tex.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
