Like Tulsa over KU? Then take a whack

Everybody has movie favorites. One of mine is “Bad Day at Black Rock,” a tense mystery/Western adventure in which the good guy (Spencer Tracy) wears black and the bad guys (Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin) are unforgettably smarmy.

Maybe I like the flick because “Bad Day at Black Rock” describes how I pick football winners.

In last week’s “We Whacked Woodling” picks on kusports.com, I had a gut feeling Kansas would knock off favored Bowling Green. After the Jayhawks stuffed the Falcons in the first quarter, I was feeling mighty cocky.

Then the wheels fell off and Kansas went right down the tubes.

Now the Jayhawks have to play away from home again and that’s troubling because Kansas has had about as much success on the road lately as Willy Loman.

Fact: Kansas has won only three of its last 23 road games, and two of those victories (UAB and Texas Tech) were in overtime. The only convincing victory was a 38-17 thumping of Missouri in 2000.

Still, the Jayhawks are playing at Tulsa, and the Golden Hurricane has the longest NCAA Div. I-A losing streak in the nation.

Yet balancing KU’s away-from-home blues against Tulsa’s fervor to halt its long skid, I have to go with the Hurricane this week.

Don’t think so? Then, go to kusports.com, select the Jayhawks and whack me.

Here are this week’s picks of Big 12 Conference football games:

New Mexico 29, Texas Tech 25 Red Raiders unable to bounce back from deflating overtime home loss to North Carolina State last Saturday. Lobos motivated by Tech’s eight-game win streak in series.

Missouri 30, Troy State 11 Tigers have had week off to lick wounds from Bowling Green belting and will become third Big 12 school to humble Alabama mid-major.

Iowa State 33, Nebraska 22 “Yank Frank” signs will appear with more frequency in Nebraska after Cornhuskers lose to Cyclones for only second time in last 25 years. ISU’s Seneca Wallace on track for Big 12 player of year honors.

Texas 44, Tulane 11 If you can’t play ’em all at home, you might as well play at least one in the Louisiana Superdome. Longhorns’ Cedric Benson should surf right through Green Wave.

Oklahoma 40, South Florida 9 Did you know South Florida is an NCAA Div. I-A school? Bulls are indeed in top echelon, but they’re no match for Sooners, especially in Norman.

Texas A&M 2, Louisiana Tech 0 Aggies have weakest offense south of Lawrence. Coach R.C. Slocum has reportedly shifted play-calling duties among aides. Yeah, that’ll help.

Tulsa 26, Kansas 22 Tulsa ends 14-game losing streak, longest in Div. I-A, against mistake-prone Kansas team that can’t overcome its history of road woes.

Kansas State 94, Idle 0 Giddy from last week’s 27-20 victory over the University of Southern Cal, Wildcats return to diet of gimmes and name the score.
