Jayhawks eager for Big 12 soccer opener

Kansas University goalie Meghan Miller swears she recognizes the plush green grass of the soccer field located behind Oliver Residence Hall.

It’s SuperTarget Field, KU’s home turf, but the Jayhawks haven’t played there in nearly a month.

So who was the Jayhawks’ last home opponent?

“Maybe UNLV. I have no idea,” Miller said.

Not quite.

The Jayhawks rallied for a 2-1 victory against Boston University on Sept. 1, when freshman Caroline Smith tapped in the game-winner in the final minute.

More recently, in Kansas’ last three victories the 6-1-1 Jayhawks are riding a school-best five-game winning streak no opponent has been able to get a shot past Miller, a Seattle native.

Miller’s three consecutive shutouts earned her the Big 12 Conference defensive player of the week award and a spot on the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week , which features standouts from across the nation. Miller also snagged the Defensive MVP trophy at last weekend’s Evansville Tournament, where she had 11 saves in two shutouts.

“It’s not just me. It’s our whole defensive unit, too,” said Miller, who ranks second in the Big 12 with 35 saves and boasts a goals-against average of .83. “It’s their shutout, too.”

Miller said her high marks were in the past, because today Kansas starts the “real” season when Colorado comes in for a 4 p.m. Big 12 opener.

The 4-3-0 Buffaloes already have bettered their win total from a year ago. CU is coming off a weekend where it picked up two victories and scored seven goals.

“From any given year to the next year, you can’t go on the game from a year before,” said KU coach Mark Francis, whose team blanked the Buffs, 4-0, in Boulder, Colo., last year. “Everyone recruits and brings in new players. They had a great recruiting class, but have had some up-and-down results as they’re still figuring things out. They’re going to be very tough.”

No. 18-ranked Nebraska comes to town at 1 p.m. Sunday. In eight tries, Kansas has never humbled the Huskers a fact not lost on senior co-captain Lindsay Hunting.

“We’ve played a couple of really good teams, but the Big 12 is so competitive,” Hunting said. “I think we’re a good enough team to be undefeated right now.

“The game that we tied and the game we lost, we weren’t outplayed, but we made some mistakes that caused their goals to happen. But we learned from each situation.”

In addition to Miller’s recent marvels, Kansas’ main headliner has been Smith.

The Edina, Minn., native leads the Big 12 with seven goals and 16 points, but Francis said he needs more than two stellar performances to keep winning.

“Yeah, we’ve got some individuals playing their individual roles very well,” Francis said.
