City athletes of the week

Emily Wang

Free State High

Class: Senior

Sports: Tennis

The week: Wang, the defending state champion at No. 1 singles, dominated at the Liberty Invitational last Saturday, claiming the singles crown with an 8-0 title-game win against Liberty’s Rachel Ibola. Wang improved to 12-0 this season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Olathe South’s Lisa Coleman on Monday.

Comment: “She certainly has her personal goals, but I like the fact that she’s been willing to participate in the team’s goals,” FSHS coach Jon Renberger said. “I think she was even more motivated Saturday to do well for the sake of the team because we’d never won that tournament.”

Lawrence High

Molly Hoss

Class: Senior

Sport: Gymnastics

The week: Hoss’ week couldn’t have been much better. She won last Wednesday’s LHS triangular, winning the vault, bars and balance beam. Last Saturday, she was third overall at the Shawnee Mission East Invitational, and won the floor exercise as the Lions were third out of eight teams. Then she was named homecoming queen on her birthday last Friday.

Comment: “She’s just a good kid, it’s fun to see her do well,” LHS coach Kathy Johnson said. “She’s been up there at the top for Lawrence High all four year. Between her birthday and homecoming and the meet, it was a pretty big weekend.”
