The week: Van Horn, a wide receiver and cornerback for the Eagles, caught four passes for 136 yards and intercepted four passes, returning one 33 yards for a touchdown in their 21-13 victory. He also returned three punts for 60 yards and had two late punts that pinned Anderson County deep in its own territory, helping to seal Wellsville’s first win of the season.

Comment: “As a high school player, you need to have someone step up every game for you like that,” Eagles coach Bill Oshel said. “He definitely had his moments where he made some big plays for us.”

Jay Matlack

Mill Valley

Class: Junior

Sport: Cross country

The week: Matlack, who split time between cross country and soccer the last two years, claimed the first win of his cross country career last Saturday at the Rim Rock Farm High School Cross Country Classic, one of the largest meets in the Midwest. The Jaguar covered the 5K course in 17:10, winning the boys Crimson division by nearly 50 yards.

Comment: “It was a great accomplishment considering the meet it was and the fact that he’s just a junior,” Mill Valley coach Mark Chipman said. “After state last year he’s really put in the work to accomplish that.”
