Prince Charles’ letter-writing defended

? Prince Charles’ office confirmed Wednesday that he has been sharing his opinions and concerns in letters to government ministers, saying it was part of his role as heir to the throne.

The Daily Mail newspaper reported Wednesday that in recent months Charles has written regularly to Lord Irvine, who as Lord Chancellor is Britain’s top legal official, and to ministers bemoaning the trend toward an “American-style personal injury culture,” and growing political correctness.

Charles’ letter-writing came to light last week, when it was reported that he had written recently to Prime Minister Tony Blair to urge him not to ban hunting with hounds.

In a statement Wednesday, staff said it was proper for the prince to take an interest in British life.

“It’s part of the royal family’s role to highlight excellence, express commiseration and draw attention to issues on behalf of us all,” said a spokeswoman, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Charles also reportedly complained about “the degree to which our lives are becoming ruled by a truly absurd degree of politically correct interference,” citing a local council’s decision to fell seven horse chestnut trees last year over fears that falling nuts could injure passers-by.
