Aquahawks Name Bliss: Scott Bliss has been promoted to head age-group coach of the Lawrence Aquahawks Swim Club. Bliss, an Aquahawks staffer for the last three years, replaces Mike Soderling who was named head coach in July when Brian Barnes left to become an assistant coach at Indiana University.
Frederick Classic: Entries are being accepted for the annual Bob Frederick Golf Classic on Oct. 4 at Alvamar. The four-person scramble benefits Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. After the tournament, items to be auctioned include two tickets to the men’s 2003 NCAA Final Four. For information, call 841-4262.
Ens Fuels KU Soccer: Nick Ens scored two goals and Sean Murray and Oumar Seck had one apiece as Kansas blanked Northwest Missouri State, 4-0, in men’s club soccer last Sunday to remain unbeaten in four games. Andy Nussbaum and Aaron Law were credited with assists.
Ladyhawks Champs: Lawrence Ladyhawks won the Quality Youth Basketball Tournament last weekend in Kansas City. Team members are Cassie Potter, Jenica Wessels, Katelyn Hobbs, Allie Hock, Kelsey Harrison, Jessica Scott, Hannah Somers and Kayley Lane. Coaches are KeKe Blackmon and Anthony Lyles.
Wood 8K Winner: Molly Wood of Lawrence won the women’s 45-49 division of the Cliffhanger 8K Run last Sunday in Kansas City, Mo. Other Lawrence placers were Dee Boeck, second in women 50-54, and Celeste Leonardi, third in women 55-59.
Beisner Wins JGC Tourney: Kent Beisner fired a one-over-par 73 and won last Sunday’s Jayhawk Golf Club tournament at Alvamar. Chad Roesler was runner-up with a 74. Brent Mertz shot 76 and Mike Grosdidier 79. In net, Bob Clark was low with a 70, followed by Kevin Walton 72, Ed Phlegar 73 and Scott Reichert 74.
Wilson Sets Record: Dick Wilson of Lawrence won the men’s over-60 division of last Sunday’s half-marathon in 1:33:22. Wilson, 70, also broke his own state age-group record for the half-marathon set earlier this year at the Raintree Run. Wilson finished 47th overall. Lawrence’s Greg Burger was third in the men’s 35-39 category and ninth overall in 1:17:23.
Heitzman Wins: Paul Heitzman of Eudora won the ages 70-74 division of the Route 66 5K last Saturday in Tulsa in a time of 20:54.
DU Football Tourney: Championship games of the Kansas University Delta Upsilon fraternity’s Greg Wilkerson Memorial flag football tournament will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Stadium. The tourney, named for a former DU member who was killed in a construction accident, has raised more than $150,000 for the Villages Inc. in Topeka and the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club since its inception in 1981.
Ruggers in Action: Kansas Jayhawks Rugby Club will entertain the Omaha Goats in a Major League Rugby match at 1 p.m. Saturday at Westwick, located two miles west of U.S. Highway 59 on County Road 458.
