KU women’s assistant Woodard to be honored at Hall ceremony

Globetrotters, former Jayhawk men's coach Brown set for induction

Kansas University women’s basketball assistant coach Lynette Woodard will be among those in attendance when the Harlem Globetrotters are inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend in Springfield, Mass.

Also to be inducted is former KU coach Larry Brown for his storied career on both the college and professional levels.

“It is a great honor for our team and I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the enshrinement,” Woodard said. “I’m looking forward to seeing some of my old teammates and meeting some new ones.

“My cousin Hubert Ausbie will be there, who is the one who got me involved with the team.”

Woodard, who will be joined by KU women’s coach Marian Washington at the ceremony, is one of 20 Globetrotters who have been honored with a Harlem Globetrotters “Legends” ring, which she received in 1996. The four-time All-American was the first female member of the Trotters.

It’s believed Woodard at some point will be named to the Hall as an individual. After a stellar collegiate career at Kansas, where she set the all-time collegiate scoring record with 3,649 points, she helped the USA win the gold medal at the 1984 Olympics. Woodard signed with the Trotters prior to the 1985 season and played with team until 1987.

Philadelphia 76ers coach Brown led KU to a national title in 1988. KU coach Roy Williams, who like Brown is a University of North Carolina graduate, will fly to Massachusetts with former KU athletic directors Bob Frederick and Monte Johnson and senior associate AD Richard Konzem tonight. They will attend Friday night’s banquet, not Saturday’s activities.

Wichita State coach Mark Turgeon will also attend.

“I am thrilled for him,” Frederick said of Brown. “He’s a great coach. He’s proven it on every level.”
