KU Football Notebook: Two Jayhawks have pending court dates

The problems of Kansas University’s football team aren’t limited to the playing field.

Two reserves quarterback Jonas Weatherbie and defensive lineman Brock Teddleton have coming court dates.

While Teddleton’s misdemeanor battery case has been previously reported, Weatherbie’s woes did not come to light until coach Mark Mangino was asked about his players’ legal problems at his Tuesday news conference.

Mangino would not comment specifically on Teddleton’s status, saying only that he was “handling it internally.”

Then the coach said he was unaware of any other players facing charges.

“Only one has been brought to my attention where there has been any kind of legal action, and I do not have any knowledge of any others,” said Mangino, whose team has lost three of its first four games. “If I did, I would react swiftly.”

Informed by a reporter that there was, in fact, another player facing charges, Mangino said, “The authorities have not contacted me. When I get knowledge of that information, you can be sure I will act swiftly.”

Weatherbie, a senior from Annapolis, Md., and the son of former Navy coach Charlie Weatherbie, is to appear next month in Lawrence Municipal Court on charges of driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.

He was arrested by Lawrence Police July 10 at Seventh and Mississippi streets, court records show. He was released on $750 bond.

On July 24, Weatherbie pleaded innocent to the charges. He is to appear in court Oct. 24 for either a trial date setting or a determination about whether he will enter into a diversion program.

Weatherbie, KU’s third-string quarterback, has played in one game this season. He started the season as the holder on the kicking team but has since been replaced by punter Curtis Ansel.

Teddleton, meanwhile, will return to Douglas County District Court on Dec. 18 for a trial. He was charged last spring in connection with a March 9 fight at Jack Flanigan’s Bar and Grill, 806 W. 24th St.

Teddleton, a junior majoring in crime and delinquency studies, played extensively in the season opener at Iowa State but was not included in the team’s travel squad the following week at Nevada-Las Vegas. The Coffeyville Community College transfer did not suit up for the home opener Sept. 14 against Southwest Missouri State. He suited up but did not play in last Saturday’s loss to Bowling Green.

Notes

Mangino announced his players of the week from the Bowling Green game. Marcellus Jones was offensive player of the week after catching four passes for 62 yards in KU’s 39-16 loss. Lineman David McMillan was defensive player of the week, and freshman Ronnie Amadi was special teams player of the week. Freshman receiver Dominic Roux and freshman linebacker Darren Rus were scout team players of the week.
