Social worker struck by car dies

Heather Coulter, a Lawrence social worker struck by a car last week, died Tuesday morning at KU Med, Kansas City, Kan.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Mike Pattrick said the police department was notified Tuesday morning by medical staff at KU Med.

Coulter, 24, suffered an open skull fracture and other broken bones after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at 19th and Iowa streets, police said.

An autopsy is to be performed Wednesday by the Douglas County Coroner in Topeka, Pattrick said.

Coulter, who worked for The Farm Inc., a foster care firm, was standing beside her stalled car at the time of the accident. A 17-year-old girl was arrested shortly after the incident but was later released pending completion of the police investigation.

That investigation is continuing, Pattrick said. Douglas County Dist. Atty. Christine Kenney said her office will review information from the investigation when it is completed.
