NFL Injuries: 49ers’ Garcia hindered by stomach virus

San Francisco quarterback Jeff Garcia missed much of the second half of the 49ers’ 20-10 win over Washington on Sunday with a stomach virus.

Garcia received intravenous fluids in the locker room at halftime and played just one series in the second half. Backup Tim Rattay, who had thrown just three passes in his first two seasons behind Garcia, filled in.

In the 48 hours before Sunday’s game, a stomach virus infected nearly a third of the 49ers. Before the game, the 49ers went through 20 bags of IV fluid and more between halves.

The 49ers also lost starting linebackers Jamie Winborn and Julian Peterson to injuries in the second half. Peterson hurt his right knee and hip, and Winborn sprained his left knee.

San Diego linebacker Junior Seau was helped to the locker room after he sprained his right ankle late in the Chargers’ 23-15 win against Arizona, but Seau does not think the injury is serious.

Arizona cornerback Duane Starks left the game against San Diego with a groin injury and San Diego center Cory Raymer left with an injured left Achilles’ tendon.

Green Bay held Ahman Green out of its game with Detroit. Green strained a quadriceps tendon in the Packers’ 35-20 loss at New Orleans last Sunday and didn’t practice all week.

Green Bay coach Mike Sherman expects Green to practice Wednesday.

Other Packers who were injured Sunday were TE David Martin with a concussion, WR Javon Walker with a bruised quadriceps and FB William Henderson with a sprained left knee.

Detroit DT Travis Kirschke suffered a badly gashed left thigh, DB Brian Walker injured a toe and LB Brian Williams hurt his right ankle, which might be broken.

In other NFL injuries, Houston Texans kick returner Jermaine Lewis sprained his right shoulder against the Indianapolis Colts.

Panthers receiver Muhsin Muhammad hurt his hamstring in the third quarter against the Minnesota Vikings and did not return. Vikings linebacker Henri Crockett sprained his elbow a few plays later.
