Mariners deny Angels berth

? The Anaheim Angels aren’t worried one bit.

Seattle prevented Anaheim from clinching a playoff spot as Ryan Franklin outpitched Angels ace Jarrod Washburn in a 3-2 victory Sunday.

“We are very disappointed in our performance the last two days, but it’s not life or death,” Washburn said. “We know it just takes one more win. We will go to Texas, clear our minds and get back to business.”

Anaheim (96-60) fell three games behind first-place Oakland in the AL West with six to play. Seattle (90-66) and Boston (89-66) are still mathematically alive for the wild card.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia doesn’t think his team is pressing.

“Everyone knows we’re close,” he said. “I think we are going about our business the same way. Everyone is focused.”

Ichiro Suzuki got his 200th hit of the season for Seattle. Franklin (7-4), who moved into the rotation Aug. 11, beat Anaheim for the first time in three career starts. He gave up two runs on six hits in 713 innings.

Franklin said the Mariners’ sole goal was to ruin the Angels’ day.

“I kind of thought last night and today when I got to the ballpark that I definitely didn’t want no one kind of celebrating and clinching it on our home field,” he said.

Washburn (18-6), who had won his three previous decisions, allowed three runs on eight hits in 613 innings. He walked three and struck out four.

Athletics 7, Rangers 5

Oakland, Calif. Jermaine Dye homered twice, including a shot that initially was ruled foul, for Oakland. Scott Hatteberg added a two-run homer for the Athletics. Mark Mulder (18-7) pitched six strong innings to win his fifth straight start as the A’s won their fifth in a row and eighth of 10.

Red Sox 13, Orioles 2

Baltimore Pedro Martinez earned his 20th win, and Trot Nixon hit a grand slam as Boston cruised past Baltimore. Martinez (20-4) has won three Cy Young Awards, but this is only his second 20-win season. It comes after an injury-plagued year in which he won only seven games while battling a sore shoulder.

Yankees 4, Tigers 3

Detroit Rondell White hit three doubles and drove in two runs to lead New York. The Yankees, playing a makeshift lineup the day after clinching the AL East, swept the three-game set to win the season series 8-1. The Tigers lost their fifth game in a row and their 101st of the year.

Blue Jays 12, Rays 6

St. Petersburg, Fla. Orlando Hudson homered and drove in a career-high five runs as Toronto avoided a three-game sweep by beating Tampa Bay. Hudson went 4-for-6 and came within a triple of the cycle. Justin Miller (8-5) gave up five runs and eight hits in 613 innings.

White Sox 8, Twins 2

Chicago Frank Thomas and D’Angelo Jimenez each homered and drove in three runs, leading Mark Buehrle and Chicago over Minnesota for a three-game sweep of the AL Central champions.
