Prep roundup: FSHS tennis wins; Free State soccer falls

? The Free State High girls’ tennis team won the Liberty, Mo., Invitational on Saturday. Lawrence High finished sixth.

Firebird senior Emily Wang continued her unbeaten season by claiming the No. 1 singles crown. Wang was 4-0, including an 8-0 trouncing of Liberty’s Rachel Ibola.

The No. 1 doubles team of Lacey Luina and Emily Loewen was second. Rachel Koch was third at No. 2 singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Ellie Ott and Brenna Spurgeon was fourth.

LHS got a third-place performance form its No. 1 doubles team of Abby and Sara Olson, who beat Park Hill’s Marie Huong and Jessie Krause, 8-6.

Free State soccer falls

Overland Park Free State surrendered a goal in the first half and another early in the second and never recovered.

As a result, Shawnee Mission West came away with a 2-0 high school boys soccer victory on Saturday at the SM District fields.

“We weren’t real enthused about being there,” FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said. “The first 20 minutes, we got dominated. The second half, we started showing signs of life, but it was too little, too late.”

FSHS (3-2-1) will play host to Leavenworth on Tuesday.

Lions volleyball 3-3 at Maize

Maize The Lawrence High volleyball team went 3-3 at the Maize Invitational Tournament on Saturday, placing fourth in the round-robin format.

The Lions, 6-6 overall, opened by beating Derby, but had three-straight losses to Manhattan, Maize and Newton. By then, outside hitter Katie Willoughby was forced to sit out the rest of the matches because of cramps, forcing setter Kristen Byington to fill in.

LHS won its final two games, beating Hutchinson and Wichita Northwest.

The Lions have a home quadrangular at 5 p.m. next Thursday.

Hoss tops for Lions at gymnastics meet

Prairie Village Lawrence High’s Molly Hoss was the Lions’ top finisher at Saturday’s gymnastics meet at Shawnee Mission East.

Hoss finished sixth on bars at 8.275, sixth on beam at 8.90, first in floor exercise at 9.05, and third all-around at 34.675.

Top Firebird finisher was Lacey Baxter, who took sixth in floor exercise at 8.35.
