Colorado hammers division-leading Arizona for second straight day

? Still comfortably ahead in the NL West, the Arizona Diamondbacks insisted no one was panicking despite losing for a second straight day to the Colorado Rockies.

“There’s nobody worried in here,” first baseman Mark Grace said. “We just need to go out and play better baseball.

“We’re fine. Our magic number is three. We need to go win three games, and we’ve got the ability to do it, no question. I’d like to do it the next three games.”

The Diamondbacks lost Brian Anderson to a broken foot and wasted a chance to clinch a playoff berth for the second day in a row, blowing a five-run lead in a 15-8 loss on Saturday.

Colorado, which trailed 6-1 and 8-4, tied the score with four runs in the fifth, then went ahead with a seven-run seventh that included Juan Pierre’s tiebreaking single, his fifth hit of the game.

Astros 6, Cardinals 3

St. Louis Matt Morris (16-9), struggling since he came off the disabled list, allowed all six runs and nine hits as St. Louis lost one day after clinching the NL Central.

Morris is 1-2 with a 6.14 ERA since he was activated on Sept. 10, allowing 10 earned runs in 14 2/3 innings. In his previous start, Houston chased him after 3 2/3 innings last weekend. Morris allowed five runs and nine hits in that one.

Atlanta Eric Owens hit a tiebreaking triple during Florida’s five-run, sixth-inning rally and Brad Penny (8-6) beat Atlanta for the third time this season.

Milwaukee Kenny Lofton and Rich Aurilia hit consecutive seventh-inning homers Ben Diggins (0-3). San Francisco (89-66) began the night with a two-game wild-card lead over Los Angeles (86-68), which played at San Diego. The Giants have won 11 of 16, and 23 of their last 33.

Cincinnati Barry Larkin’s two errors in the 10th helped Philadelphia win the opener of a day-night doubleheader, and Tomas Perez’s 11th-inning homer Joey Hamilton (4-10) finished the’ sweep.

New York Esix Snead hit a three-run homer off Dan Smith (1-1) in the 11th inning, stopping Montreal’s seven-game winning streak.

Cubs 4, Pirates 2

Pittsburgh Sammy Sosa barely missed his 499th career homer and 49th this season with a go-ahead, two-run single as Chicago rallied with three runs in the seventh. Kyle Farnsworth (4-6) struck out the only two batters he faced.

San Diego Marquis Grissom hit a two-run single off Trevor Hoffman (2-5) with two outs in the ninth inning to back a brilliant performance by Hideo Nomo.
