Grothaus passes C-S past Baker, 31-13

? Clint Grothaus completed 23 of 39 passes for 434 yards and two touchdowns as 24th-ranked Culver-Stockton upended Baker, 31-13, in Heart of America Conference football on Saturday at Poulton Stadium.

Grothaus also rushed for 45 yards.

His passing and total yards were school records.

“He is good,” Baker coach John Frangoulis said. “We would get some pressure on him, he would scramble around, we would come out of coverage, and he would take advantage. He is good on the run. We would try to contain him, but he just runs around and makes great plays because he is an athlete.”

Martin Updike was 21-for-39 for 233 yards for Baker, but he was sacked eight times.

Ramon Barber was Baker’s rushing leader with 54 yards on 19 carries. He scored BU’s only touchdown on a six-yard run in the second quarter.

“We were dancing too much instead of hitting holes,” Frangoulis said. “You have to run the football to win, unless you have the weapons like they have. They have some firepower.”

Nate Tubach kicked a pair of field goals for Baker (1-2, 1-2). C-S, which improved to 3-0 and 3-0, had three receivers with more than 100 yards each.

Culver amassed 513 total yards to Baker’s 244.

BU will play host to Lindenwood on Saturday.
