Scattered showers expected through afternoon

It might be a good idea to carry an umbrella Thursday. Occasional rainfall is expected through the rest of the day, says a state weather forecaster.

“It’ll be pretty much just scattered showers through the afternoon,” said Scott Whitmore, National Weather Service meteorologist.

Lawrence received 0.21 of an inch of rain by 7 a.m. Thursday at the Lawrence Municipal Airport, he said.

Most of the strong storms that thundered through northeast Kansas overnight were to the north of the Lawrence area, Whitmore said.

Waubunsee, Pottawatomie, Brown, Morris and northern Jefferson counties had the most rainfall, high winds and hail, he said.

The closest hail reported near Lawrence was at Valley Falls, which had 3/4- inch hail and 60 mph wind, he said. Holton report hail an inch in diameter. The highest rainfall amount was recorded in Dunlap in Morris County, which had 1.47 inches, he said.

“We still have a chance for some showers tonight. We’re not expecting much, no more than a quarter of an inch,” he said.

Temperatures will be cooler through the weekend in into next week, with highs in the middle 70s during the day and lows at night in the middle 50s, he said.
