Wildlife help

To the editor:

Two recent stories have called attention to the need for wildlife rehabilitation centers. Organizations such as WildCare and Operation WildLife perform valuable services by caring for large and small birds and mammals that are orphaned or injured. These organizations are needed largely because residential and commercial development encroaches on sensitive wildlife habitat. As trees come down and floodplains are filled, animal homes are destroyed. New roads disrupt natural pathways and put animals in danger.

If you are moved by the thought of injured and orphaned wildlife, also consider supporting organizations working to preserve wildlife habitat. Local groups include the Sierra Club, Jayhawk Audubon Society, Wetlands Preservation Organization and the Alliance for the Conservation of Open Space. You can attend meetings to learn more about local preservation issues, volunteer your time, or simply make a financial contribution. Your support will help protect wildlife and preserve natural resources for Lawrence and Douglas County residents.
