Ever try to claw your way through the information on a bag of dog or cat food? Ever wonder whether manufacturers are using less-than-healthful filler in your precious puppy’s chow mix?

The link between nutrition and health is nothing to sneeze at, says the Pet Food Institute, which represents dog and cat food manufacturers and sponsors this site in the interest of consumer education.

Pet food makers are governed by three entities: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the state where they manufacture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It’s a good thing, too, because so many pets subsist solely on whatever’s in the chow mix.

A food labeled beef dog food must be 95 percent beef. Beef dinner will be only 25 percent beef, however. Labels that say with beef means no less than 3 percent. Beef flavor means just enough flavor for a dog to recognize it.

Every ingredient is there for a reason. That means the lowliest ingredient has some sort of nutritional purpose.
